What is better, to go for J2SE 1.2 or J2SE 1.4 exam ?
It is very much dependant on your preparation and urgency. Mostly version does not make major difference as a qualification. Just getting Certified is enough. But 1.4 will have only 10-20% different course content when compared to J2SE1.2. This is quite easy if you are thinking of just passing since the percentage required for passing 1.4 will be less.
If you've prepared well in other topics, & even if practised less for Assert keyword, chances are, that you will clear the exam.

Can I go for Certification Training Classes, Is it helpful?
If you are short of time, and have enough of money (approximately Rs. 16,000 - 25,000), you can go for Certification classes. If you have decided to go for certification classes try to get certified trainer only. What ever the training is, it is just going to give you introduction to the language. You can't appear for certification exam, immediately after completion of your training classes. Certification trining is usually for about 80 hrs, which can be as full time batch of 8 hrs a day. That way it finishes within two weeks. Now you can't expect anyone to be a Good Java Programmer in 2 weeks. One should practise Java everyday, for 2 to 6 months. The study time variation from 2 to 6 months is depending on the experience of person.

How much time it takes to get the results after the exam?
You get the results almost there itself on your screen. You get congratulations, if you secured more than or equals to 61% in SCJP 1.2 and 52% in SCJP 1.4, Sorry, if you have not. When you leave the examination lab, you get the results printout with full classification of percentage in each topic. If you have cleared the exam, you are eligible to get the Certificate, but that is not given immediately on the spot. It takes two to three weeks for certificate to arrive, which comes at your postal address. I got my certificate in 7 days, but some of my friends got it after a month or even more late. It is actually dispatched from USA.

What you get if you don't clear the exam? When can you re-appear for the exam?
You get a printed marksheet. You can get the idea of performance in each topic in this. You should look into this as guidelines for improvement areas.
As per the new rules you can re-appear for the exam only after 2 weeks from the current one. This is done to keep those guys away who mug up and forget everything in a short span of time. Candidates should take this compulsion as a forced opportunity to study in-depth for atleast 2 more weeks. Afterall it is not the Luck which puts you on the other side of the world but your skill and efficiency.
